If you believe we can learn from the past… Create a legacy to inspire the future!
Making Your Legacy
Making a bequest or other legacy gift to the National Maritime Historical Society is a deeply personal and effective way to support our work. Legacy gifts make a meaningful difference in our ability to promote our common maritime heritage and the role seafaring has played in shaping civilization. Below you will find an overview of several different ways in which you can make a gift to NMHS. Consult your legal or financial advisor to determine which of these ways of giving would work best for you.
The NMHS Legacy Society
We hope you will notify us when you have included NMHS in your future planning, so that we may thank you and welcome you as a new member of our NMHS Legacy Society. The Legacy Society honors those special supporters who have provided for our future by including NMHS in their estate plans or by establishing a charitable gift annuity. Legacy Society members, if they so choose, are listed in our Sea History magazine and serve as an inspiration to others to join them in planning for our future.
A Gift in Your Will or Living Trust
A gift in your will or living trust is one of the most effective ways to provide for NMHS’ future and allows you to retain your assets during your lifetime. In addition, your estate may benefit from a charitable estate tax deduction. The gift may be easily included in your will when it is written, or it may be added through a simple codicil or amendment. You may wish to leave NMHS a stated dollar amount; a percentage of your residual estate (what remains after debts, taxes and specific bequests have been made); or a specific asset, such as securities or other marketable property.
Naming the National Maritime Historical Society on a retirement or life insurance policy is a simple way to provide for NMHS’s future without writing or re-writing your will or living trust. These assets will pass directly to NMHS without going through the probate process. You can request the appropriate form from your retirement plan administrator.
Retirement Accounts: Many donors name NMHS as a beneficiary for all or a specified percentage of their IRA, 401(k), 403(b) or other retirement plan.
Life Insurance Policies: If you have a life insurance policy that is no longer needed for your family, designating NMHS as a beneficiary offers a simple way to support our work.
How Our Members are Making a Legacy
“Most of our forbearers arrived by water to America. Boats and the sea have been the means, for the past half millennia, of the transfer of people, language, culture and goods worldwide. Yet in America, there is a lack of awareness and respect for this fact. My post mortem contribution to the National Maritime Historical Society is a ‘cry in the wilderness’ to alter this dismal reality and to shed light on the importance of the sea and ships through education and promulgation of this history.”
—Philip Teuscher, NMHS Legacy Society
“It gives me great satisfaction to support NMHS over the past several decades. In addition to giving annually I have included the Society in my estate, which enables me to make a meaningful gift to an organization with an outstanding reputation that has since 1963 carried on its tireless work preserving our maritime heritage. It is one part of planning I no longer need to think about because I feel confident in the mission and integrity of NMHS.”
—Howard Slotnick, NMHS Treasurer & Chairman Emeritus
