The Maritime Nexus: Re-connecting Landsmen with Their Seagoing Heritage
15-19 September 2010
|
|
Sometimes referred to as the gathering of the maritime clans, Maritime Heritage Conferences serve as an outstanding forum for individuals and institutions to share their passion for our seagoing heritage. - David Winkler, Program Chair
Join us in Baltimore as the maritime community gathers in the historic Inner Harbor for the 2010 conference. Historic Ships in Baltimore, home port of USS Constellation, USS Torsk, USCGC Taney, LV-116 Chesapeake, and Seven Foot Knoll Lighthouse and the Naval Historical Foundation are pleased to host the 9th Maritime Heritage Conference.
Held every three years, this conference provides an opportunity for maritime heritage enthusiasts and scholars, members of local, national, and international maritime heritage and preservation organizations, and all those interested in the sea and our history upon it to meet, exchange ideas about issues affecting the broader community, and have a great time while doing so!
Baltimore's historic Inner Harbor will be the site of the 2010 conference, at the Hyatt Regency Baltimore overlooking USS Constellation in her home berth. The annual meeting of the Historic Naval Ships Association and several other maritime organizational forums will run concurrently with this conference.

The conference theme, "Maritime Nexus," envisions the marine environment- the Earth's oceans, seas, and freshwater great lakes and rivers-as a global meeting place. The 9th Maritime Heritage Conference will provide a unique opportunity for individuals from all segments of the maritime heritage communities to come together to discuss topics of interest, learn from their peers, and consider how to connect our fellow citizens with their seagoing heritage.

Wednesday evening's kickoff gets underway with a reception aboard the SS John W. Brown, where attendees can imagine themselves heading out from port to port to join a World War II tans-Altlantic convoy, followed by the constant threat of the U-Boat peril... beware the Wolfpack!
The opening plenary session on Thursday morning will feature David Rockefeller Jr., president of Sailors for the Sea, who will discuss past explorations as the context for the recent successful Around the Americas Cruise that drew attention to the cause of Ocean Conservation. Admiral John C. Harvey of Fleet Forces Command will discuss the Navy's partnarship with OPSAIL and plans for Tallship events in conjunction with the bicentennial of the War of 1812.
Thursday's Luncheon will feature noted author Clive Cussler who will receive the first Maritime Heritage Conference Award of Distinction. He will speak about the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA) that he founded and describe their significant underwater discoveries, most notable CSS Hunley.
Thursday's evening reception will take attendees back a century as they walk the decks of the sloop of war, USS Constellation, a vessel that remains reminiscent of the time she served on anti-slavery patrols off the coast of Africa.
Friday's offerings give attendees the option to travel by bus to Washington DC for tours of maritime treasures found in our nation's capital, including opportunities to see the maritime holdings of the National Archives, Sant Ocean Hall at the Smithsonian, National Museum of the United States Navy and Cold War Gallery in the Navy Yard, and the National Museum of American History and its exhibition, "On the Water: Stories from Maritime America." (see ADD-ONS below)
Friday US Coast Guard Barque Eagle, America's sailing ship, will arrive at Baltimore Harbor and be available for the weekend for your visitation.
On Friday evening the Maryland Historical Society and Johns Hopkins University Press will host a Book Launch for Maritime Maryland - A History. Dr. William S. Dudley, noted naval and maritime historian, will discuss the impact and significance of Maryland's maritime past and the complex interactions between man, the waterways and the land.
Saturday will be a full day of sessions and presentations, including tours of NS Savannah, the one-of-a-kind, nuclear-powered cargo-passenger ship. Daytime activities will be followed by a reception on board USCG Barque EAGLE and dine arounds in Baltimore. Your options are many: visit Little Italy, Fells Point via water taxi or watch the Yankees and the Oriels battle it out at Camden Yards.
On Sunday join the Army Historical Foundation "Staff Ride" to Fort McHenry to examine the 1814 British Chesapeake campaign or travel to Annapolis to visit the US Naval Academy Museum with the option of attending Sunday services at the USNA Chapel.
