USS Westchester County, LST-1167

Commemorating the Mining of USS Westchester County

 

31 October, 10:00 AM – Lasdon Park, Somers, NY

 

Tragedy struck on 1 November (31 Oct EST), 1968 while USS Westchester County (WESCO) lay anchored in the vicinity of My Tho, Vietnam, two enemy mines attached to the hull about mid ship on the starboard side detonated, causing a giant underwater explosion that ripped through the WESCO. The explosion ruptured berthing areas as well as fuel and storage tanks, and killed 23 US servicemen.

The survivors and family members will be coming to Westchester County to commemorate this event in a ceremony. The public is encouraged to attend to show their support for these Vietnam veterans who did not receive the recognition they deserved in 1968 and to honor their crew dead.

The ceremony: Bagpipes – Color Guard – Honor Roll – Rifle Salute – Taps.
