2021 Annual Awards Dinner Postponed

It is with great disappointment that we announce we must postpone our Annual Awards Dinner that was to take place this October.  Despite our best efforts, public health concerns over the Delta variant have convinced us that rescheduling is the only responsible way forward.  Even with safety measures in place, we feel that increasing COVID concerns amongst our participants deters from the gala experience and the spirit of celebrating our esteemed award recipients.  Rather than hold the dinner at a reduced scale, we plan to reschedule to next year, on 27 October 2022.

We will contact those who have purchased tickets and sponsorships as soon as possible, and we thank you for your support!  Thank you also for your understanding during this difficult time.  We look forward to gathering again in the future.

The Awardees

portrait

David K. Elwell Jr.

David K. Elwell Jr. will receive the NMHS Distinguished Service Award in recognition of his remarkable contributions to yachting. Elwell spearheads the mission to attract younger people to the joys and challenges of sailing, encouraging yacht clubs to provide access and training to young, and disadvantaged, members of the community. Elwell is an America’s Cup sailor, a past Commodore of American Yacht Club, in Rye, NY, and current Rear Commodore of the New York Yacht Club. Understanding the significance of recognizing the accomplishments of exceptional yacht racers, he is leading the project to house the National Sailing Hall of Fame in the Armory Building in Newport, Rhode Island.  George W. Carmany III, NMHS Overseer and 2014 Distinguished Service Award recipient, will present the award.

Steven Kalil

Steven Kalil, President of Caddell Drydock Inc., will be recognized with the NMHS Distinguished Service Award. His knowledge, commitment, and vision have helped steer Caddell Drydock to great success and made it indispensable to the larger shipping community. Originally founded by John B. Caddell over one hundred years ago, this family-owned shipyard has constructed and serviced thousands of vessels. Caddell’s clients include service to the Staten Island Ferry fleet, tugs, tankers, lighters, and barges from all the major maritime transport companies of the East Coast. Over the years they have repaired or restored the US Coast Guard barque Eagle, Gazela Primeiro of Philadelphia, HMS Rose, the replica of Henry Hudson’s Half Moon, and the tall ships Wavertree and Peking, to name a few. Kalil has delivered extraordinary service to the maritime heritage community and the larger shipping industry, impressively managing the oldest shipyard in New York Metropolitan Area.  Capt. Jonathan Boulware, President & CEO of South Street Seaport Museum, will present the award.

RADM Joseph Callo, USN (Ret.) and CAPT Sally McElwreath Callo, USN (Ret.)

RADM Joseph Callo, USN (Ret.) and CAPT Sally McElwreath Callo, USN (Ret.) will be the first couple to receive the NMHS David A. O’Neil Sheet Anchor Award. They are extraordinary ambassadors for the Society, extending its outreach globally. Their support has been invaluable, inviting NMHS to represent the United States, along with the American Friends of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, at events in Portsmouth, England, where the Society was introduced to Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne. NMHS subsequently invited Her Royal Highness to New York to receive its Distinguished Service Award. They have engaged the Society’s support with the Pickle Night dinner honoring Lord Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar. They arranged for Society representation at many events, including Navy League Dinners and Fleet Week receptions. CAPT McElwreath, formerly a corporate executive, served in the Navy Reserve for 27 years, and more recently, was director of the USS New York (LPD-21) Commissioning Committee. RADM Callo, a 35-year veteran, is a prolific, award-winning author and screenwriter. Each of them has made a significant contribution to maritime history, and together they are a formidable force.  Erik K. Olstein, former President and Trustee of the Board of the American Friends of the National Museum of the Royal Navy and former NMHS Trustee, will present the award.
