Thomas A. Whidden

Thomas A. Whidden will receive the NMHS Distinguished Service Award for his outstanding contributions to yachting and his leadership in the design and manufacturing of technologically advanced sails; he is known the world over for his resolute pursuit of excellence on and off the water. He is a member of and has been awarded by the America’s Cup Hall of Fame and the National Sailing Hall of Fame. He is president and CEO of North Technology Group, parent company of North Sails, one of the largest sailmaking companies in the world. He has worked to make the Sailing Museum and the National Sailing Hall of Fame in Newport, Rhode Island a reality, honoring achievement in yachting and encouraging younger generations to pursue the sport.  Fellow Hall of Fame sailor and NMHS Overseer Gary Jobson will present the award.

Steven Kalil

Steven Kalil, President of Caddell Dry Dock & Repair Co., Inc., will be recognized with the NMHS Distinguished Service Award. His knowledge, commitment, and vision have helped steer Caddell to great success as they support the larger shipping community. Originally founded by John B. Caddell over one hundred years ago, this family-owned shipyard has constructed and serviced thousands of vessels. Caddell’s clients include service to the Staten Island Ferry fleet, tugs, tankers, lighters, and barges from all the major maritime transport companies of the East Coast. Over the years they have repaired or restored the US Coast Guard barque Eagle, Gazela Primeiro of Philadelphia, HMS Rose, the replica of Henry Hudson’s Half Moon, and the tall ships Wavertree and Peking, to name a few. Kalil has delivered extraordinary service to the maritime heritage community and the larger shipping industry, impressively managing the oldest shipyard in the New York Metropolitan Area.  Capt. Jonathan Boulware, President & CEO of South Street Seaport Museum, will present the award.

RADM Joseph Callo, USN (Ret.) and CAPT Sally McElwreath Callo, USN (Ret.)

RADM Joseph Callo, USN (Ret.) and CAPT Sally McElwreath Callo, USN (Ret.) will be the first couple to receive the NMHS David A. O’Neil Sheet Anchor Award. They are extraordinary ambassadors for the Society, extending its outreach globally. Their support has been invaluable, inviting NMHS to represent the United States, along with the American Friends of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, at events in Portsmouth, England, where the Society was introduced to Her Royal Highness, Princess Anne. NMHS subsequently invited Her Royal Highness to New York to receive its Distinguished Service Award. They have engaged the Society’s support with the Pickle Night dinner honoring Lord Nelson’s victory at Trafalgar. They arranged for Society representation at many events, including Navy League Dinners and Fleet Week receptions. CAPT McElwreath, formerly a corporate executive, served in the Navy Reserve for 27 years, and more recently, was director of the USS New York (LPD-21) Commissioning Committee. RADM Callo, a 35-year veteran, is a prolific, award-winning author and screenwriter. Each of them has made a significant contribution to maritime history, and together they are a formidable force.  Erik K. Olstein, former President of the Board of the American Friends of the National Museum of the Royal Navy and former NMHS Trustee, will present the award.
