Dr. Salvatore Mercogliano
Salvatore Mercogliano is an Associate Professor of History and the chair of the History, Criminal Justice, and Political Science Department at Campbell University in North Carolina. He holds a B.S. in Marine Transportation from SUNY Maritime College along with a merchant marine deck officer license. Mercogliano sailed with the Military Sealift Command (MSC).
He left government service to earn an M.A. in Maritime History and Nautical Archaeology from East Carolina University. He also pursued a Ph.D. in Military and Naval History from the University of Alabama. As a prolific writer, Professor Mercogliano has published articles in Sea History, The Nautical Research Journal, Northern Mariner, Proceedings, Naval History, and the Journal of Military History. Additionally, he authored the monograph Fourth Arm of Defense: Sealift and Maritime Logistics in the Vietnam War.
His teaching career includes positions at Methodist University, East Carolina University, UNC-Chapel Hill, and the US Military Academy. He also serves as an adjunct professor at the US Merchant Marine Academy, offering a course in Maritime Industry Policy. At Campbell University, he has been recognized twice as Professor of the Year and received multiple awards for teaching excellence.
In 2021, Mercogliano launched the YouTube channel What's Going on With Shipping after the Ever Given incident in the Suez Canal. The channel has since grown to over 305,000 subscribers and garnered 58 million views.
