Learn about the earthquakes in Moodus, Connecticut which gave rise to the legends of the Moodus noises. And what the future holds for damaging earthquakes. Did you know in the 1960s Boston, Massachusetts was given the same seismic hazard rating as Los Angeles, California?

John Ebel has been a professor of earth and environmental sciences at Boston College for more than thirty years. He is a research scientist at and former director of Boston College’s Weston Observatory, which is used to detect, locate, catalog, and study all earthquakes that occur in New England and vicinity. He holds a BA degree in physics from Harvard University and a PhD in geophysics from the California Institute of Technology.

The Connecticut River Myths and Legends exhibit is made possible in part by CT Humanities, The Kitchings Family Foundation, The Community Foundation of Middlesex County, The River View Cemetery Fund, The Sallie and Robert Boody Fund, and the Dryfoos Foundation.

The Connecticut River Museum is located at 67 Main Street, Essex and is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 AM – 5 PM and closed on Mondays until Memorial Day.
