SUMMARY:Carolina Ironclads: Vain Efforts to Defend The Tar Heel State
DESCRIPTION:The loss of the North Carolina Sounds prompted the Confederate Navy to begin the construction of four ironclads on the Roanoke\, Tar\, Neuse\, and Cape Fear rivers. These shallow draft ironclads would mount two rifled guns. Only one ship\, CSS Albemarle\, would help to recapture eastern river ports. The others faced various setbacks: one was destroyed during construction\, one was unable to steam down river because of draft issues\, and the other was destroyed when it ran aground. The Carolina Ironclad Building Program was hampered by time and iron. Presented by John V. Quarstein\, director emeritus of USS Monitor Center. \n  \nIn Person Attendees: Free for Museum Members. Included in $1 admission. (Seating is limited\, advance registration is required.) \nVirtual Attendees: This lecture is livestreamed and free to watch online.

SUMMARY:USS Monitor Legacy Program: City-Class Ironclads: The Pook Turtles
DESCRIPTION:John V. Quarstein\, director emeritus of the USS Monitor Center\, will present the multifaceted history of USS Monitor\, and the program will be in person and livestreamed from the Explorers Theater at the Museum. \nAttendees are welcome to send comments or questions to John\, and he will answer them following his talk. Advance registration is required whether you attend this event in person or online. \nAbout the presentation:  \nControl of the Mississippi River was one of the Union’s major war aims from the very beginning of the conflict. Inventor James Eads developed a design that could be easily built\, had limited draft\, was armored\, and had stream power. These ironclads became the backbone of the US Western Gunboat Flotilla. The City-class iron gunboats had many flaws; nevertheless\, ships like USS Cairo and USS Carondelet\, enabled the federal fleet to win such great victories as Battle of Island No. 10 and the Battle of Memphis. These actions would result in the fall of Vicksburg in July 1863.

SUMMARY:USS Monitor Legacy Program: Siege of Port Hudson
DESCRIPTION:About the presentation: Port Hudson\, Louisiana was a river port situated on high bluffs overlooking the Mississippi River. This strategic position enabled the Confederacy to block Union transit up and down the river. From Admiral Farragut’s effort to pass the Confederate batteries to the town’s surrender on July 9\, 1863\, this river bastion’s capture is an excellent example of how the North’s superior resources proved the Anaconda Plan a success. With Port Hudson’s capture\, the Mississippi River\, according to President Abraham Lincoln\, flowed into the sea. \nAttending in person? \nThis event is included in $1 admission\, and free for Mariners’ Museum Members. Seating is limited. \nWatching remotely? \nThis lecture is free to watch and you may register online.

Six days after Sumter’s surrender\, Flag Officer Hiram Paulding used Pawnee as a relief force to save Gosport Navy Yard from capture by the Confederates. Paulding arrived too late to stop the abandonment of the largest navy yard in the United States. Union soldiers\, Marines\, and sailors then helped lay waste to Gosport. SUMMARY:'Beyond the Ocean's Depths': Revisiting the Challenger Expedition (1872-1876) Interdisciplinary Conference
DESCRIPTION:Registration is now open!  \nRoyal Museums Greenwich\, with support from the Challenger Society for Marine Science and the UCL Department of Science and Technology Studies\, are pleased to announce that registration is now open for ‘Beyond the Ocean’s Depths: Revisiting the Challenger Expedition (1872-1876) Interdisciplinary Conference’\, to be held 7-8 November 2023 at the National Maritime Museum\, Greenwich. \n150 years ago\, HMS Challenger departed England on a quest to explore the world’s oceans. Three and a half years later the ship returned\, bringing with it the largest collection of examples of life from the deep sea. The expedition is considered a definitive moment in our understanding of the ocean as a complex ecosystem on which all life on Earth depends. \nOn the 7th and 8th of November 2023\, the conference will bring together 25 speakers from a variety of disciplines including museum curators\, marine scientists\, historians\, artists\, independent researchers and filmmakers to consider the enduring historic\, colonial and scientific legacies of this ground-breaking voyage. Keynote talks will be given by Sujit Sivasundaram\, University of Cambridge\, and Helen M. Rozwadowski\, University of Connecticut. \nBased in the historic National Maritime Museum\, Greenwich\, the programme also includes the exciting opportunity to view the original 1872 HMS Challenger refit ship plans\, photographs made onboard\, manuscripts and archives.  Lunch\, refreshments and a drinks reception are provided. \nPlease see our website to view the full programme and to register for the event. We look forward to welcoming you to the National Maritime Museum\, Greenwich in November.

SUMMARY:SBMM Presents - Cargo in Question: Two Films
DESCRIPTION:The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) presents “Cargo in Question: Two Films about Labor\, Shipping\, and Globalization in the 21st Century” taking place on Saturday\, September 16\, 2023\, at 1:00 p.m. As part of this special event\, Mae Miller-Likhethe\, PhD and Charmaine Chua\, PhD\, both assistant professors of Global Studies at UC Santa Barbara\, will screen two films—Cargo (2001\, 29 minutes) and All that Perishes at the Edge of Land (2019\, 31 minutes)—followed by a Q&A session and discussion (a full 90 minutes). The films\, which blur the lines between fiction and reality\, offer important insights into the daily lives\, working conditions\, and dreams of the seamen and shipbreakers across global supply chains. The cost is free for all SBMM members; free for students with student ID; and the price of admission for the general public. Space is limited\, registration is required. Learn more and register at: https://bit.ly/cargo-in-question. \n  \nAbout the Films \nCargo (Dir. Laura Waddington\, 2001\, 29 minutes) is the story of a journey on a container ship with a group of Rumanian and Filipino sailors\, who were delivering cargo to the Middle East. Most of the sailors weren’t allowed to leave the boat and they spent their days waiting\, singing karaoke and telling stories in a small TV room. In Syria\, the ports were military zones. The filmmaker hid at a porthole and secretly filmed the life below – a man stealing wood and a soldier fishing off the edge of an abandoned submarine – and later created a narrative that falls between reality and fiction in an effort to show the limbo these men were living in. \nAll that Perishes at the Edge of Land (Dir. Hira Nabi\, 2019\, 31 minutes) shows the Ocean Master\, a decommissioned container vessel\, and enters into a dialogue with several workers at the Gadani yards. The conversation moves between dreams\, desires\, places that can be called home\, and the violence embedded in the act of dismantling a ship at Gadani. As the workers recall the homes and families they left behind\, the long workdays mesh indistinguishably into one another\, and they are forced to confront the realities of their work in which they are faced with death every day. How may they survive and look toward the future? \nThis event is generously sponsored by Marie L. Morrisroe.

SUMMARY:San Salvador Ship Public Tours During Fiesta Weekend
DESCRIPTION:In partnership with the Maritime Museum of San Diego and Old Spanish Days Fiesta\, the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum is pleased to announce the arrival of the galleon replica San Salvador into port for the 2023 Santa Barbara Old Spanish Days Fiesta. \nSan Salvador is a full-scale sixteenth century replica of the flagship used by Spanish explorer Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo during the first European voyage to make contact with the Indigenous Native Americans here while exploring what would one day become the West Coast of the United States. The ship will be available for free public tours at the city pier at Santa Barbara Harbor on Saturday\, August 5\, 2023\, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. and Sunday\, August 6\, 2023\, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. \nMeticulously constructed by the Maritime Museum of San Diego over six years and US Coast Guard Certified\, San Salvador is one of very few early modern replica ships in which members of the public can glimpse through experience what seafaring beyond the known world was like half a millennium ago. The San Salvador vessel represents a time and experience in Pacific maritime history for adventurers young and old. This is her first voyage since 2019 due to the pandemic. \nAs Cabrillo’s ship did five hundred years ago\, the San Salvador will be greeted at sea by area Chumash in their replica of a historic tomol. This historic re-enactment will take place on Friday\, August 4 at 10:30 a.m. in the waters on the west side of Stearns Wharf. \nThe San Salvador’s visit is generously sponsored by the Santa Barbara Maritime Museum\, Old Spanish Days in Santa Barbara\, Rick Oshay\, and Teresa Kuskey. \nImage courtesy of Jerry Soto.

SUMMARY:“Conquering the Pacific: An Unknown Mariner and the Final Great Voyage of the Age of Discovery ” with Professor Andrés Reséndez
DESCRIPTION:The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) presents “Conquering the Pacific: An Unknown Mariner and the Final Great Voyage of the Age of Discovery ” with University of California-Davis history professor Andrés Reséndez on Thursday\, February 16\, 2023 at 7:00 pm.  As part of his presentation Dr. Reséndez will discuss his latest book\, Conquering the Pacific and tell the little-known story of the first trans-Pacific expedition.  Cost is free for SBMM’s Navigator Circle Members\, $10 for all other members\, and $20 for members of the public. There will also be a pre-lecture reception for members only from 6:15-6:45pm. Register at: https://sbmm.org/santa-barbara-events/ and become a member at https://sbmm.org. \nAsked about his presentation\, Reséndez described the subject of the story as follows: “A Genoese navigator brought the New World to European attention in 1492. A similar ‘Columbian moment’ occurred in the Pacific\, even though most people are unaware of  it … Polynesian navigators first crossed the great ocean by island-hopping from the coast of China to the Americas; and Magellan was the first European to go from the New World to Asia in one swoop during his famous voyage of 1519-1522. But the complete trans-Pacific voyage—from America to Asia and back (“the vuelta”)—only first occurred in 1564-1565 under the guidance of an Afro-Portuguese pilot. SUMMARY:Central Coast Ocean Adventures & the Tall Ship Mystic Whaler
DESCRIPTION:The Santa Barbara Maritime Museum (SBMM) presents “Central Coast Ocean Adventures & the Tall Ship Mystic Whaler” on Thursday\, October 20\, 2022\, at 7 pm. This in-person lecture by Christine Healy and Michael Sheehy\, of Central Coast Ocean Adventures (CCOA)\, will share the story of the tall ship Mystic Whaler\, her voyage from Connecticut to California and the plans for her future. Cost is free for SBMM’s Navigator Circle Members\, $10 for all other members\, and $20 for members of the public. There will also be a pre-lecture reception for members only from 6:15-6:45pm. Register at: https://sbmm.org/santa-barbara-event/ and become a member at https://sbmm.org/membership/ \n  \nReady the dock lines! \nThe 110-foot\, two-masted tall ship Mystic Whaler and its parent nonprofit\, Central Coast Ocean Adventures (CCOA)\, plan to deliver uniquely immersive ocean-based educational experiences to Santa Barbara. Peek into the history of Mystic Whaler and share in the voyage that brought this steel-hulled representation of a 19th-century merchant schooner from Connecticut to California. See why this majestic ship with its 3000 square feet of sail is the perfect medium for teaching CCOA’s educational philosophy: To adventure is to discover and learn from the unfamiliar. Preview how adventure-inspired learning is explored through sailing and the sea onboard Mystic Whaler and is central to CCOA’s programs that develop and strengthen STEM academic comprehension\, nautical skills\, and social/emotional learning. Discover CCOA’s commitment to making engaging experiential education and the Santa Barbara Channel more accessible to the communities of Santa Barbara and Ventura counties. \nChristine Healy\, Captain of the Mystic Whaler \nThe sailing bug bit Christine as a teenager in Annapolis\, MD\, where she learned the basics of sailing racing with her brother aboard his 26-foot sloop\, Wolpertinger. She paid attention\, quickly becoming a useful crew member. At the age of 19\, she bought her first boat\, Esmeralda and took weekend trips all over the Chesapeake Bay. While living onboard\, she was offered her first long boat delivery\, from Annapolis to St. Vincent\, via Bermuda. In Christine’s words\, “It was my first time truly out at sea\, and I knew it was what I wanted to do with my life. Needless to say\, it all worked out\, and my career as a professional sailor began.” \n  \nAfter several deliveries\, she began her first job aboard the schooners Woodwind and Woodwind 2\, which was the beginning of her traditional boat career. With that experience\, she moved onto larger ships\, Pride of Baltimore 2\, Amistad\, Clipper City\, Liberty\, and many others. At the age of 23\, she sat for her first captain’s license: 100-ton master with sail endorsement. In 2008 she moved to California and worked on the Lynx\, which sailed up and down the West Coast\, then out to Hawaii as an exhibition class in the Transpack 2009. She has been working on the West Coast\, based out of San Diego since. \n  \nHer experience has varied throughout her career\, from deliveries\, charters\, research\, and private yachts to sail training and educational vessels. About her work\, Christine says\, “The challenges that change every day keep it interesting. The ocean and sailing have the power to challenge students to push themselves and inspire their imagination. To teach and share maritime history\, the structure of life at sea\, the beauty of our oceans\, and the life within is a passion and privilege.” \nMichael Sheehy\, Director of Development and Programming\, CCOA \nMichael’s love for the ocean is at the heart of his diverse professional experience\, including marine science instruction and research\, environmental conservation advocacy\, nonprofit program directing\, and nonprofit strategic development. At the age of 7\, Michael’s main outlet to the outdoors was through learning to sail with his dad\, with missteps being the best teacher. Michael fell in love with the ocean and has made a life of learning from it and sharing it with others. \nMichael studied the ocean and its wildlife as a working scuba diver for NOAA and a research associate at the Marine Science Institute at the University of California\, Santa Barbara. He lectured at UCSB in marine biology and taught marine science for Northeastern University’s Three Seas Program in Jamaica and aboard the tall ship Westward for Sea Education Association. Michael led marine science research in the Caribbean for UCSB and marine conservation advocacy as director of marine programs for the Santa Barbara Channelkeeper. He went on to support marine conservation as executive director of the Code Blue Foundation and was an independent consultant to business and nonprofit organizations on strategy and development. \nBefore joining CCOA\, Michael increased opportunities for youth to access the coast and oceans as director of development aboard the tall ships Irving Johnson\, Exy Johnson\, and American Pride for Los Angeles Maritime Institute and Children’s Maritime Institute in San Pedro and Long Beach\, California\, respectively. Michael holds a master’s in marine ecology and evolutionary biology from UCSB\, an MBA from Pepperdine University\, and a Certificate in Social Entrepreneurship from Stanford University’s Graduate School of Business\, Executive Program. Michael sits on the Steering Team for the LA STEM Collective\, a network of more than 40 entities committed to equitable access of STEM informal education for youth in the Los Angeles area. Michael loves snorkeling\, surfing\, sailing\, and any chance to get salty and sandy with his family.
