Education Auction Live Pledge:
Reaching Learners Where They Are
with Sea History Online Video Content
In a few short months, the National Maritime Historical Society will celebrate its 60th anniversary. As the publisher of Sea History magazine, we’ve logged hundreds of thousands of written words about our shared maritime heritage, and the time to share that scholarship with the public via new methods is now. We want to reach learners where they are. And where they are is online.
In particular, learners are watching videos on YouTube, the second-most popular search engine right after Google. Experts call the information you get from short educational videos found on the site “microlearning,” which has been reported to not just improve retention compared to traditional learning methods, but also generate more engagement. 9 out of 10 schools agree that the use of videos in education increases student satisfaction.
Our goal is to use stories published in Sea History as well as from the NMHS-published Gazette and our popular Sea History Today e-news series as the bases for short, microlearning videos to be distributed on YouTube and other social media sites to fulfill the Society’s educational mission of promoting maritime history.
Video production is expensive. But because NMHS already has an untapped resource of Sea History content, we believe we can produce two-to-three-minute videos for $1,000 each, using online narration and animation services and images already available in our collections. Each donor of $1,000 or more will receive sole underwriting credit, and donors giving under $1,000 can split underwriting with others.
With your support of our education auction live pledge, we can promote the important stories of our maritime past to the millions of lifelong learners who use YouTube as their first resource, promoting maritime scholarship and inspiring future generations to pursue maritime careers. No matter the size of your gift, you will be playing an important role in supporting our shared mission. But to get there, we need generous benefactors like you!
Please make your bid by donating online at www.seahistory.org/give or to place a bid by proxy, email nmhs@seahistory.org or call (914) 737-7878 Ext. 557. The deadline to place your bid is 8 May 2023 at midnight EST. All supporters will be announced live at the National Press Club on 9 May 2023.
Thank you for your support!
