Founded in 1997 by Captain Bill Sheehan, Hackensack Riverkeeper is the leading environmental organization working on Hackensack River issues. A founding member of Waterkeeper Alliance, the group engages in a fourfold strategy of environmental action, advocacy, education and litigation in its ongoing work to protect, preserve and restore the Hackensack River Watershed from its headwaters in Rockland County, NY to its mouth at Newark Bay in NJ. Hackensack Riverkeeper is a 501(c)3 nonprofit.
PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:
Hackensack Riverkeeper conducts Eco-Cruises aboard its 30-foot pontoon research vessels Geraldine Theresa and Robert H. Boyle II each year from May through October. The group operates two small boat liveries: Overpeck Park Kayak Center, located on Overpeck Lake in Teaneck, NJ, and Riverkeeper’s Paddling Center at Laurel Hill Park, located directly on the river in Secaucus, NJ, each year from Earth Day (April 22) through late October. Both scheduled and charter programs are available. Active conservation through volunteer river cleanups take place April thru November. Riverkeeper conducts environmental education programs and special events throughout the year.
