PortSide New York brings the community ashore and community afloat together at its home on the tanker Mary A. Whalen on Pier 11, Atlantic Basin next to the Brooklyn Cruise Terminal in Red Hook, Brooklyn. The organization is a maritime center that combines the working waterfront, public access and community development, and displays a new model for urban waterways. The Mary A. Whalen is a ship on the Register of Historic Places, where PortSide gives tours, provides educational programs, and stages cultural activities. Visitors can witness an authentic, dynamic working waterfront with maritime action – see ships come and go, watch the containerport cranes, and walk along the pier with the most varied collection of historic and working vessels on one NYC location.
PortSide also produces WaterStories programs in arts, education, preservation, resiliency, workforce and harbor advocacy. Online, you can visit Red Hook WaterStories, the e-museum with 400+ years of coastal history and a guide to contemporary Red Hook.
