James Delgado, a maritime archaeologist and explorer, stands on a research vessel with a deep blue ocean and distant coastline in the background. He is wearing a black shirt, a blue unbuttoned overshirt, and black pants, smiling as he holds onto an orange submersible hatch. The sky is partly cloudy, and the water reflects the sunlight, creating a vivid maritime setting.

Layton. Drawing from decades of experience in maritime preservation, including his tenure directing NOAA’s Maritime Heritage Program, Dr. Delgado explores the evolution of maritime archaeology in California primarily through the influence of both amateur wreck divers and professional archaeologists. A recent review in Sea History magazine praised the book, stating it “…stands out as an essential contribution to the literature of maritime archaeology, inspiring readers to appreciate the stories hidden beneath the waves and the dedication required to uncover them.”
