Join us as we explore the life of Howard I. Chapelle, one of the most influential maritime historians of the 20th century. Through his meticulous research and documentation of historic wooden boats and ships, Chapelle left a lasting legacy of detailed plans, groundbreaking books, and a guiding philosophy that continues to shape maritime scholarship today.
Maritime Historian and writer John Sledge will bring Chapelle’s story to life, drawing from his extensive body of work to examine his impact on maritime history and ship preservation.
About the Speaker
John S. Sledge is the maritime historian-in-residence at the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf of Mexico and a member of the National Book Critics Circle. Sledge is the author of eight books, including The Gulf of Mexico: A Maritime History and Mobile and Havana: Sisters Across the Gulf, and a frequent contributor to Sea History.
