New Bedford – The View Across to Fairhaven from Centre Street in 1884
An unexpected snowfall blankets New Bedford, Massachusetts, during the city’s whaling heyday. In this 1884 view looking down Centre Street and past Central Wharf, we see the lights of Fairhaven just across the harbor. The whaler Isabella rides at anchor, while bark Cicero, with her whaling days behind her, is moored to the wharf. Isabella was lost less than a year later in the ice of Hudson Bay. Her crew survived and was rescued and returned to port by the schooner Era.

John Stobart (1929–2023) John Stobart was a preeminent maritime artist. Prior to his arrival in America in 1965, he gained a wide reputation for his portrayals of ships for shipowners worldwide. After his New York City sell-out debut, the name “Stobart” would become synonymous with the rediscovery of the nation’s lost ports, most having changed beyond recognition in the on-rush of progress. Stobart then began an effort to bring his artistic ideals to a larger audience through his art and other means. His paintings and limited-edition prints are collected internationally.
