Mount Desert Island in northern Maine is one of America’s most treasured national wonders. In 1916 the area became the Northeast’s only national park. Almost circular in configuration, the island is divided in its center by what is said to be America’s only fjord. Somes Sound was formed by a glacier that sliced a wide, steep-sided gorge with a body of water running through it north and south. In 1862 Abraham Somes settled his family there, and the scene depicted here is near the home he built. This bucolic scene of a bygone era, painted by America’s foremost maritime artist, epitomizes the peace and joy we wish for you this holiday season.
John Stobart is preeminent in the field of maritime painting in America. Prior to his arrival to America in 1965, he gained a wide reputation for his portrayals of ships for shipowners worldwide. After his New York City sell-out debut, the name “Stobart” would become synonymous with the rediscovery of the nation’s lost ports, most having changed beyond recognition in the on-rush of progress. Stobart then began an effort to bring his artistic ideals to a wider audience through his art and through other means. His paintings and limited-edition prints are collected internationally.
