Mary Powell On A Summer Morning, 1895 by William G. Muller
$130.00
Description
On a summer morning in 1895, the beautiful steamer Mary Powell, most famous for the by-gone Hudson River sidewheelers, rounds Dunderberg Mountain at the southern entrance to the Hudson Highlands. Built in 1861 for service as a fast dayboat between Rondout, NY and New York City, the Mary Powell had a distinguished career for a remarkable 57 years, faithfully transporting passengers on a brisk and precise daily summer schedule.
Called “Queen of the Hudson”, the Mary Powell was frequently sought out by the chic new steam yachts of the day for the purpose of racing her, in the hope of establishing a rare and much celebrated victory as a faster vessel.
Generously donated by William G. Muller from his Personal Collection. Muller grew up on the Hudson River. As a young man, he served as quartermaster aboard SS Alexander Hamilton in the 1950s and went on to become a master painter, specializing in the steamboat era in the Hudson River and beyond. A founding director and Fellow of the American Society of Marine Artists, Muller serves as an advisor to the National Maritime Historical Society.
