$30.00

Description

Splendor Sailed the Sound. The New Haven Railroad and the Fall River Line is a photographic and text celebration of an American institution.  Splendor takes you back to a pleasant bygone America, an era of unbelievable interior architecture in coastal passenger boats, an era of financial and corporate manipulation and duplicity, and the era in which our nation came of age. This is the exciting story of steamboating on Long Island Sound in the days when that 120-mile waterway was the primary transportation artery between New York and Boston.

In 384 pages and 450 large-format photographs and illustrations, Splendor traces the development of the steamboat and rail routes to Bridgeport, New Haven, Hartford, New London, Norwich, Newport, Fall River, Providence, Bristol and New Bedford; and the story of their acquisition and control by the New York New Haven and Hartford Railroad.

The cast of characters includes the real inventors of the steamboat, as well as Cornelius Vanderbilt, J.P. Morgan, George Peirce, Jim Fisk, Phineas T. Barnum, and a group of the most intrepid and skilled mariners ever to leave the shore.
