https://seahistory.org/wp-content/uploads/USS_Westchester_County_2.jpg1306825Tragedy struck on 1 November (31 Oct EST), 1968 while USS Westchester County (WESCO) lay anchored in the vicinity of My Tho, Vietnam, two enemy mines attached to the hull about mid ship on the starboard side detonated, causing a giant underwater explosion that ripped through the WESCO. The explosion ruptured berthing areas as well as fuel and storage tanks, and killed 23 US servicemen.
