O’Brien will share his meticulous process, from gathering archival records and firsthand accounts to sketching and refining compositions. Learn how he brings the past to life on canvas, capturing the details of historic ships and seascapes with stunning accuracy. Don’t miss this behind-the-scenes look at the research, creativity, and skill that define his acclaimed maritime artwork.

About the Speaker
A full-time illustrator and artist since 1985, Patrick O’Brien is the president of the American Society of Marine Artists (ASMA). His clients have included National Geographic, the Discovery Channel, and the Smithsonian, and his art has appeared in magazines and newspapers, on posters and greeting cards, and even on billboards. He is the author and illustrator of twelve non-fiction picture books for children, about historic and prehistoric subjects such as knights, pirates, ships, and dinosaurs. O’Brien entered the marine art field in 2003; seven years later the US Naval Academy Museum mounted a retrospective exhibition featuring twenty-eight paintings by the artist. In 2012, The National Maritime Historical Society awarded O’Brien with its Distinguished Service Award for his body of artwork.
